Hackney Beech Tree Crane Removal

The Arborist is lifted into the tree via the crane, before setting up the slings ready for the first pick.

The Brief

Hickson Wardle Treecare were requested to provide an estimate for the removal of a large, mature Fagus sylvatica (Beech tree). The tree had been issued a five-day notice from the London Borough of Hackney due to the presence of fungal pathogens that were severely decaying the main trunk of the tree. The decaying section of the tree was bearing the entire weight of the upper canopy (approximately 10,000 kilograms). The tree was situated in a small backyard surrounded by buildings and areas with high public use. Given the elevated risk associated with maintaining the tree, Hackney Council determined that its removal was necessary.

The Arborist makes his first cut after slinging the section of tree to be removed and lifted by the crane.

The Method

As the tree was large and contained several tonnes of timber, Hickson Wardle Treecare determined that the safest and most efficient method for its removal was to utilise a crane. The conventional techniques would have necessitated three days of work, causing significant disruption to the local residents and businesses. By employing a crane, the tree was efficiently removed within a single working day, minimising strain on the team and stress on the structure of the tree.

Hickson Wardle Treecare managed all aspects of planning, including obtaining the necessary permits and implementing traffic management measures. Comprehensive lifting plan, risk assessments, and method statements were prepared prior to commencement of the work. Continuous communication with the client and local residents ensured that everyone was informed about the progress of the job on the day of execution.

On the day of the operation, all necessary arrangements and coordination were meticulously executed to ensure a smooth, efficient, and safe removal of the tree. All waste and timber were removed efficiently from the site, leaving it clean and tidy for the local community to resume their activities.

Overall, a potentially disruptive task was accomplished by an exceptional team of individuals with exceptional efficiency and safety. Hickson Wardle Treecare adhered to the highest standards of quality in carrying out this work.
